Two Chhatra League leaders filed two sedition cases against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in 2014, but a Sylhet court dismissed them.

The decision was handed out on Sunday by Judge Sagir Ahmed of the Second Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

Additional Public Prosecutor Abu Fahad said the cases had been dropped due to the plaintiffs’ failure to appear in court.

Then-general secretary of Sylhet District Chhatra League M Rayhan Chowdhury and then-president of Sylhet Agricultural University Chhatra League Shamim Molla filed the cases on December 22, 2014.

According to court sources, the two sedition cases were filed against Tarique Rahman over alleged derogatory remarks about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the United Kingdom made on December 15, 2014 at an event of the BNP.

Upon taking the cases into cognizance, a Sylhet court directed the officer-in-charge of Shahporan police station to submit investigation reports.

Subsequently, police submitted their findings, leading the court to issue an arrest warrant for Tarique Rahman in one of the cases.
