In relation to the July–August insurrection, a Dhaka court has issued remand periods to a number of high-ranking Awami League leaders, their supporters, and top police officers.
Police presented former DC DB Mashiur Rahman, former prime minister’s adviser Salman F. Rahman, former state minister for communication and information Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, former minister and Workers’ Party president Rashed Khan Menon, former minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSod) president Hasanul Haq Inu, and former DC DB Mashiur Rahman to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
The investigating officer requested remands to facilitate a thorough investigation, while the defendants’ lawyers filed bail applications, seeking to annul the remand orders.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza denied the bail requests and approved remands for various durations.
In the case involving the shooting death of Shakib Hasan during the protests, the court granted a seven-day remand for Palak and Dipu Moni.
A similar seven-day remand was also granted for these officials concerning the case of Emon Hossain Gazi’s death.
Additionally, in the case of the death of 14-year-old Mahmudul Hasan Joy, the court approved a five-day remand for Palak and Salman F Rahman.
Mashiur Rahman received a four-day remand related to the death of Rofiqul Islam, and a five-day remand was granted for Palak in the attempted murder case of Majedul in the Newmarket area.
