Nihon Hidankyo has won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
Awarding the prize at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo on Friday, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said: “The group received the honor for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”
Since its founding in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has sent survivors all around the world to testify about the horrific agony and destruction brought about by the use of nuclear weapons.
Nearly ten years after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they started their job.
The group of survivors of the atomic bomb has earned numerous nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, including a special mention from the Norwegian Nobel Committee in 2005.
