Export and import activity between Bangladesh and India restarted via railway through the Benapole land port on Wednesday morning, after being suspended for 47 days.

Trade resumed following consultations between high-ranking officials from both countries. Rezaul Karim, Deputy Director of Benapole Land Port, confirmed the matter.

According to the port sources, in July, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and public protests, the Indian government took several measures citing security concerns.

Among these measures was the suspension of cargo transportation and passenger travel by railway between the two countries from July 19.

However, after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 following a public uprising, an interim government was established, and the situation normalised.

On August 12, the rail authorities of Bangladesh sent a letter to their Indian counterparts calling for resuming trade and passenger services.

Mohsin Milon, president of the Benapole Import-Export Association, said that traders were relieved following the resumption of trade via railway through the land port.

He stated that this method is used to import a variety of items such as stones, gypsum, and components for cement production.

Garments, chemicals, and automobiles are also imported.
