Violence against women and children is on the rise across the country. According to the Bangladesh Indigenous Women Network and Kapeng Foundation, indigenous women and children across the country have been subjected to various forms of abuse. These crimes include murder, rape, abductions, extortions and other crimes. These issues came up in the discussion on preventing violence against indigenous women and children at the regional level meeting of Bangladesh Indigenous Women Network in Moulvibazar district as part of the 16-day program to prevent violence against women around the world announced by the United Nations.

Hiron Mitra Chakma, manager of Kapeng Foundation, and Ujjal Azim, education, literary and cultural affairs secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, were present as guests of honour. Kalighat UP women member Mitu Roy, Satchari Tripura village headman Chittaranjan Debbarma, Greater Sylhet Tripura Development Council President Janak Debbarma,greater Sylhet Tripura Development Council vice president woman leader Maya Rani Debbarma, Panchayat committee president of Patrakala tea garden Swapan Kurmi, Khasi Social Council publicity secretary Saju Marchiang.

Speakers in the meeting said that there are more than 54 tribes in Bangladesh. 2% of the total population of the country are tribals.

Speaking about the life of tribal women, the speakers said that everyone sees the colorful life of tribal women but no one sees the hardships. In the open discussion of the meeting, the women said that tribal women live in marginal areas.From pregnancy to daily activities, they have to deal with various problems. Tribal women are subjected to daily exploitation and abuse on racial, gender, linguistic, religious and class grounds,being victimized by eve teasing and discrimination. An indigenous woman is always worried about her safety and movement outside, as a result of which the incidents of human rights violations against indigenous women and children are increasing day by day.Tribal women are subjected to violence including rape, sexual harassment, torture, abduction and trafficking of women.
