The law that granted Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation’s father, and his family members special protection has been revoked.
The “Father of the Nation Family Members’ Security (Abolishment) Ordinance, 2024,” which was signed into law by the president on Monday, repeals the “Father of the Nation Family Members’ Security Act, 2009.”
The advisory council gave its approval to the draft ordinance on August 29.
The 2009 Act was implemented under the previous government’s decision, with a gazette issued on May 15, 2015, offering exceptional security and advantages only to one family, resulting in a glaring imbalance, as the Advisory Council’s approval observed.
Following the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the current interim government has committed to eliminating all forms of discrimination.
Notably, on August 25, a writ petition was filed in the High Court challenging the legality of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Family Members Security Act as well as the Special Security Force Act, 2021.
Mohammad Moniruzzaman, an attorney at the Supreme Court and the assistant secretary general of the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS), submitted the petition. There hasn’t been a hearing on the case by the court yet.
