Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, called Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Monday to congratulate him on his appointment to lead Bangladesh’s interim government.

The chief adviser was commended by the UNHCR chief during the phone call, who described him as having taken on “an incredible task” to reconstruct Bangladesh.

The issue of the Rohingya people, who have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, was deliberated by the two leaders.

Prof Yunus sought his support for the dignified and voluntary return of over one million Rohingya people, who live in camps in Bangladesh, to their homeland in Myanmar.

He also sought assistance from the UN refugee agency for building a better future for young Rohingya children who are growing up inside the Bangladesh camps.

The UNHCR chief requested the chief adviser to attend a meeting on the Rohingya crisis on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

Prof. Yunus was advised by Filippo Grandi that he would be traveling to Bangladesh in October of this year.
