On Sunday, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will file a case with the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division to reinstate its party registration with the Election Commission.

“An application will be made to the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division (of the Supreme Court) on Sunday to revive the dismissed appeal with regard to the cancellation of party registration,” Jamaat’s lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir informed journalists on Saturday.

He said the case pending in the Appellate Division has not been resolved after full hearing and since it was declared “Dismissed for Default”, therefore “we will apply for revival of the case.”

“If our appeal is allowed, we will get the registration back. We will get back the party symbol,” Shishir added.

The party decision came days after the government in an executive order allowed the party to carry on its activities but Jamaat decided to go through the legal procedure to get back its registration as well.

The Jamaat’s registration had previously been revoked by the Election Commission, and the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina has also outlawed its political activity as of August 1, 2024.
